Highcliffe Charity Players Regent Centre Christchurch January 2004 Sets are impressive, costumes simply wonderful and Peter ‘Please Sir’ Denyer’s excellent script adds a welcome modern touch to the traditional story and provides plenty of slapstick. Ian Carter’s band makes a great sound too, and the eclectic mix of songs goes down a treat. Chorus movement, choreographed by Jane White, is lively and energetic, while directors Mike Young and Georgina Smith clearly chose their cast well, as performances are second to none. All the principals have a good rapport with the audience, not least David Coward’s marvellous Tim Curry sound-alike Fleshcreep, who invoked loud boos whenever he appeared. Stuart Tizzard is a suitably outrageous Dame Dottie Trot, and his ‘I Remember it Well’ duet with King Maurice (a superb David Gillard) is one of the show’s highlights. Both Aaron Carlo (Jack) and 15 year old Carly Ward (Jill, who is played by Chloe Moore at some performances) are confident and strong-voiced and there are fine characterisations too from Jo Mansfield (Fairy Moonbeam), Mark Weldon (Silly Billy) and David Parish (Giant Blunderbore), while Daisy the Cow (Liz Sutherland & Marcus White) is wonderfully endearing.
