Theatre 2000 Regent Centre Studio Christchurch June 2004 Accompanied by Neil Sissons and directed by Albert Brown and Angie Broomfield, the five performers sing and move their way through over 30 songs, both well-known and unfamiliar, as the story of love, rivalry and loneliness between a group of 5 characters unfolds. But there is no libretto, and the characters’ feelings are revealed only through songs and body language - and Steve McTaggart, Clare Gray, Andrea Young, Paul Bower and Kamya Rawstron Brake have their non-verbal communication down to a fine art. The pinnacle is perhaps Paul and Clare’s Shall We Dance, which brings tears to the eyes – and if you’re thinking Yul Brynner and Deborah Kerr you’re on the wrong track entirely, because these are tears of sheer, unadulterated laughter. It’s heaven, and just one of the many high spots in an evening that from start to finish is a brilliantly performed joy that I could happily have sat through all over again.
