ENCORE
Poole & Parstone Singers
Barrington THeatre
Ferndown
July 2004

CUPS they’d won at Bath and Cheltenham Music Festivals were proudly displayed on stage at this excellent concert – not that the audience needed any proof that they were watching one of the best choirs around.
From the very beginning attention to detail was obvious in the Singers’ matching costumes, and it appeared that there were even strict jewellery rules enforced too, all helping to create a cohesive appearance.
Conductor Jean Chambers clearly settles for nothing less than the best, and it has paid off in the excellent vocal quality and outstanding, well-balanced harmonies that were evident throughout the evening. And Mary Potter, although virtually hidden behind the piano, also made a huge contribution to its success with her fine, sensitive accompaniment.
In Big Spender they sang about showing us a good time, and that was certainly what we had. This ever-smiling group, whether singing as a whole or in smaller sections, proved their versatility with such diverse selections as In Paradisum from Faure’s Requiem, Back to the Sixties, Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy, medleys from Oliver and Blood Brothers, Sanctus From The Armed Man and the comic Great Gnome Robbery.
Those cups, I think, are the first of many.
