DARK LUCY
Angel Players
Holy Angels Church Hall
Lilliput, Poole
November 2003

THIS gripping and well-constructed thriller by Philip King and Parnell Bradbury kept the audience on the edge of their seats throughout the evening, due in no small measure to an extraordinarily good performance from Players’ newcomer Jemma Sander-Heys.
She played the central role of Carol Clevedon, a former actress who is recovering from a nervous breakdown and has been greatly disturbed by a chance meeting with one of the village’s oldest and strangest inhabitants. But both her husband, the Rev. Gavin Clevedon (Ron Kite), and the local doctor (David Hooker) believe she is just acting as a drama queen – until a young girl goes missing.
Directors Audrey Moore and Marion Pendred kept both pace and suspense building steadily while bringing out a surprising amount of humour, and their cast created highly believable characters. Joan Higgins was a cheery delight as housekeeper Grace Roberts and Jenny Davidson nicely flustered as Mrs Wilson, mother of the missing girl. And Jeremy Austin, who took on his role just two weeks ago, and whose character appeared only in the third act, made an unforgettable impression as the creepy, mesmerising Edward Hastings.
