MICHAEL Cooney’s surprisingly little-known farce has all the ingredients for a rip-roaring, gut-busting evening, and that is just what is provided in this excellent production.
The typically convoluted story line centres round Eric Swan, who has been systematically fleecing the DSS for two years by employing every trick in the book. But when Mr Jenkins arrives one morning to check over some details, mayhem breaks out in more ways than one!
Although I was bemused by the cast’s rather frequent tendency to stand in straight lines, Anne Robertson’s otherwise fine direction ensures that everything moves at a cracking pace, and every situation is exploited to its maximum potential.
There are cracking performances too, with Steve Watton and Jeremy Smith providing a tremendous double act as Eric Swan and his lodger, Norman Bassett. David Wickham is an absolute joy as Eric’s Uncle Joy, while Jean Gell comes close to stealing the show as DSS manager Ms Cowper. Judy Harris, John King, Lonnie Watson, Joan Ogden, Jamie Stockton, Jan Watton and a particularly agile washing machine also make their presence felt in this thoroughly enjoyable show, which is certainly worth catching if you can make it.
