A MAN FOR ALL SEASONS
Bournemouth Shakespeare and St Peter's Players
St Joseph's Church Hall
Parkstone, Poole
March 2004

HAVING never before seen the stage version of this play, my memories were only of what I remembered as a rather over-long film, so I was not exactly looking forward to this production with unalloyed joy.
In the event, however, it proved to be a thoroughly enjoyable evening that decanted me back into the real world in plenty of time to be tucked up at a reasonable hour. Lucky me - poor Thomas More was hauled out of bed at all hours of the night to answer for his silence on the subject of Henry VIII’s proposed divorce and re-marriage.
And in Tim Beacock the company found a strong and dignified More who held the stage throughout with his charismatic personality. Also standing out in a very powerful cast were Kevin Dicker (Thomas Cromwell), Daniel Sutton (Richard Rich), Simon Carlton (William Roper), Natalya Hammond-Betts (Margaret More) and Denis Carlton (the Common Man).
John Slocombe’s carefully considered direction worked extremely well, although it was a pity that his attention to detail did not extend to the men’s obviously 21st century trousers, which were totally at odds with the rest of the 16th century costumes.
With all those executions around, he should watch his head.
