Bournemouth Little Theatre
Jameson Road, Moordown
Bournemouth
December 2002

FROM the opening moments of this extraordinary play, written by the renowned Anthony Shaffer, it is clear that such a brilliantly crafted, funny yet serious piece of theatre almost defies description.
True, it has the usual country house setting, gruesome murder, plentiful suspects and motives galore. However, almost all the characters wear ridiculously obvious wigs and have over-the-top personalities - at least during the early part of the evening –, tricking the audience into believing they are watching something quite different to what eventually transpires.
Don Cherrett’s direction is spot-on, and his excellent cast does him proud with superb, multi-faceted characterisations. There are some absolute gems from Peter Beebee (butler Archibald Perkins), Virginia Harrington (Lady Tremurrain), Rebecca Gross (Lavinia Hargreaves) and Janet Chiesa (Dame Edith Runcible), while all that is missing from Andrew Whyatt’s evil Andreas Capodistriou is a green follow spot and a chorus of hisses and boos.
Don Gent, Noel Davenport and Tom Swadling are all plausible suspects and Paul Mole and Dave Clements bring more than a little humour to their roles as the police assigned to the case.
And, should you go along, do listen to the strange, disembodied voice you will frequently hear. You’ll spend the entire evening trying to guess to whom it belongs
