WE'LL MEET AGAIN
Light'n'Shade
Regent Studio
Christchurch
June 2003

THE music of the Second World War seems to hold a special place in the hearts of the British people, so it was perhaps no surprise that this concert was a sell-out.

None of this first-class company – Tracey Barrington, David Hopkins, Louise King, Simon Leaton, Martin Mansfield, Georgina Smith, Peter Whitaker and Andrea Young – was even a twinkle in their parents’ eyes at that time, yet, in their superb period costumes and wigs, they might have stepped straight out of the 1940s. And with the Studio decked out with Union flags and a super programme designed as a ration book, the illusion was complete.

The evening was beautifully put together, with numbers interspersed with recordings of important speeches by Chamberlain and Churchill as well as poems and sketches. And the songs, accompanied by pianist Patrick Neale and ranging from the poignant (We’ll Meet Again, I’ll Be Seeing You, You’ll Never Know) to the comic (Run Rabbit Run, Kiss Me Goodnight Sergeant Major) and the up-tempo (Chattanooga Choo Choo, Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy) were hugely enjoyable. The finale medley – words thoughtfully provided – was a welcome chance for the audience to exercise their lungs, and they didn’t need asking twice.
