WATERS OF THE MOON

GIVEN that a sudden thaw is pivotal to the plot of this gentle drama, it is a pity that when a character draws back the curtains in the final scene it is to reveal a landscape still plainly in the grip of the snow that has caused such distress. And the Merry Christmas banner hanging in the window, although setting the scene, looks rather more 21st century than the early 1950s it should represent.
But let that pass, because this production, strongly directed by Hugh Norris, beautifully captures the claustrophobic existence of a group of people living in straitened circumstances in a small Devon hotel, and the effect on their lives of the rich, flamboyant Lancaster family, who take up temporary residence when their car breaks down.
Virginia Harrington’s delightfully eccentric fur-clad Helen Lancaster, bursting onto the gentle scene like a dangerous, unpredictable whirlwind, is in lovely contrast to the characters of the quiet-living residents, superbly played by Tommy Egerton, Noel Davenport, Joy Taylor and Mike Satchell.
Jason Green is particularly impressive too as John Daly, and club newcomer Debra Heyse makes an outstanding and deeply moving debut as his sister, Evelyn.
