WAITING IN THE WINGS
Angel Players
Holy Angels Church Hall
Lilliput
April 2003

IT is quite a feat for any small drama group to assemble a cast of 17 for a play, so all credit to the Players for doing so in celebration of their 21st birthday, and for making it such an enjoyable production. Among that cast, five of the group’s founder members were involved in this Noel Coward play, which is set in The Wings, a charity home for retired actresses.
waiting Whilst some of the ‘inhabitants’ were not really theatrical enough to suggest a lifetime of treading the boards, together the company easily conveyed the highs, lows and camaraderie of a group of people living in such circumstances. And the pathos, cynicism and humour of Coward’s words were well brought out in the production, which was splendidly directed by Audrey Moore.
The split-level set was impressive too, allowing for no fewer than ten seats on the small stage yet never giving the impression of lack of space – although I imagine the reality may have been different!
Whilst it may seem unfair to single out individuals from such a large and impressive cast, I did feel that Joan Higgins (retired star Lotta Bainbridge) and Myra Poppleton (confused pyromaniac Sarita Myrtle) caught their characters to perfection.
