A VARIETY SHOW
Ferndown Phoenix Musical Society
Kinson Community Centre
Bournemouth
April 2003

THERE weren’t any jugglers or plate spinners, but they were about the only things that didn’t feature in this well-balanced and brightly costumed show, impressively directed by Janet Barrow.

There was magic from confident young teenager Lee Redwood, displaying a fine line of patter between tricks, a jazz ballet routine from another teenager, Gina Birch, and a solo flute medley from Colin Pile.

Mike Hutchings, in schoolmaster mode, attempted to talk about the birds and the bees, while Sam Richardson hilariously slurred and hiccoughed her way through a whisky cake making demonstration. And an If I Were Not Upon The Stage comedy routine, complete with deep-sea diver, golfer, hairdresser et al, almost brought the house down.

But it was songs that made up the bulk of the evening, ranging from show music, standards and blues to Elvis, The Beatles and rousing patriotic songs. Ensemble singing was particularly strong, although the men’s chorus seemed rather vague about their words at times. There were good solo numbers and duets too, and a special mention must go to Gina Starkey, forsaking her musical director’s baton for a few minutes to enchant the audience with Gracie Fields’ ‘Bottom Drawer’ number and the contrasting Summertime.

Oh, and about those plates - they did appear, not spinning, but bearing a Ploughman’s Supper for all.
