A SOPHISTICATED EVENING
Theatre 2000
Priory Hall
Christchurch
May 2003

THIS company never does anything by halves, so a softly lit hall complete with linen covered tables, each with a floral arrangement, proved the perfect setting for what was indeed a sophisticated evening of musical entertainment with supper, performed as part of the Christchurch Food and Wine Festival.
Disaster was narrowly averted on opening night, when accompanist David East’s car, with keyboard and music inside, broke down en-route. He arrived only minutes late, and although he’d had to leave his keyboard behind, the hall’s piano was a worthy substitute.
With the nail-biting panic over, the elegantly costumed cast – Cindy Wells, Malcolm Clarke, Andrea Young, Frank Beakhouse, Louise King, David Hopkins, Yvonne Loader, Elaine Hamper and Pete Whitaker – , each with an easy and impressive rapport with the audience, enchanted everyone with over 30 nostalgic Rodgers and Hart numbers including Blue Moon, Johnny One Note, The Lady Is A Tramp, With A Song In My Heart, I Could Write A Book and Mountain Greenery.
Director Albert Brown and choreographer Angie Broomfield kept the pace fast and slick, and the company did them proud with their enviable stage presence, pzazz and obvious enjoyment.
