ROMEO AND JULIET
Bournemouth Shakespeare Players
and St Peters Players

St Josephs Hall, Parkstone
POOLE
March 2003

THIS judiciously pruned production, directed by Chris Gorman, was brought bang up to date with the addition of modern-day scourges such as drugs, mobile phones, press scrutiny and violence, and the gang members portrayed as opposing football teams.
Laurence (no Friar here) became a coach, the Nurse an opinionated, spiky-haired minder, the Capulets a hard-drinking, hard-living couple and Romeo and Juliet the trendiest of young couples who bought their ‘drugs’ from a leather-clad dealer.
And it worked surprisingly well, save for the fact that the all-important ‘death scene’ was set low on one side and therefore visible only to those lucky people in the first couple of rows, leaving the rest of us to listen and use our imaginations.
But the performances more than compensated, with Sean Beaumont and Rosy Hastrop stealing many of the acting honours as the lovers. Both perfectly fitted the bill physically, had excellent diction and brought real passion and feeling to their roles. And how could I leave out Elin (correct) Mitchell’s beautifully characterised Nurse, when she brought such a lovely touch of humour to the production?
All in all a winning match, I’d say.
