RAPUNZEL
A Summer Pantomine
Purbeck Players and
Swanage Choral and Operatic Society

Mowlem Theatre
Swanage
August/September 2002

IF you’re fed up with the relentless rain, or even the sunshine, you could do far worse that take the family along to this summer pantomime where you can boo, hiss, sing along to your heart’s content and forget all about the weather.
Down in deepest Eganaws (try a mirror if you don’t know where it is!) the fair Rapunzel (a charming Fiona Hymns) has been imprisoned in a tower by the evil Old Mother Kimmeridge (an excellent Gina Lewis). Enter the handsome Prince William of Worth (a fine performance by Julia Gadenne), who comes to the rescue with the help of various villagers, and a happy ending is assured for almost everyone.
The first night pace was a little slow, and I’m still trying to work out why everyone suddenly found themselves mid-show in a Desert Oasis. However, this is a lovely fun evening with many clever touches and is beautifully costumed and well performed, with superb direction from Jean Rickard and excellent musical accompaniment from the Chris Shiner Trio.
The music in fact is particularly notable, with a good choice of songs, some fine arrangements and superb singing, especially from Brian Johnson as Old Harry Rock.
All that, and they might even give you a sweet as well.
