CLEVER lyrics, good tunes, wonderful costumes and wigs, quick-fire direction and choreography from Bertie Brown and Angie Broomfield, tremendous musical accompaniment (David East & Louise Cox) and, above all, a hugely entertaining concept.
I can’t remember the last time I laughed as much as I did at this glorious spoof beauty contest, in which all six contestants competing for the Miss Glamouresse crown are played by men. It was one of those heart-warming occasions when I was smiling at the beginning, mildly hysterical at mid-point and in need of sedation by the end.
Mike Purnell was simply sublime as oleaginous host Frankie Cavalier, and there were some wonderful ‘turns’ from the contestants. I adored Miss Bible Belt’s (Paul Bower) Bankin’ on Jesus number, complete with toy xylophone accompaniment, Miss West Coast’s (Frank Ewins) attempts to demonstrate deodorant dispensers were, well, mind-blowing, and the roller skating, accordion-playing Miss Industrial Northeast (Duncan House) brought the house down with her ‘freedom’ solar hair rollers.
The other contestants: Miss Texas (Danny Seldon), Miss Deep South (Neil Fielding) and Miss Great Plains (Malcolm Clarke), were also charm personified – at least until they failed to win. (I’m not giving anything away here, as the judges come from the audience so the results vary).
See it, please. It’s a real tonic.
