OUT FOR THE COUNT
West Moors Drama Society,

May 2003

THIS vampire yarn, sub-titled How Would You Like Your Stake, formed the main part of an evening of entertainment that also included supper, bingo and a quiz.
Its setting was a dinner party at Dr Sewer’s Lunatic Asylum in Whitby, where the guest of honour is to be one Count Nolyard, newly arrived from Transylvania and searching for a fresh supply of blood.
As the Count, Dan Sheen looked horrifically Dracula-like, and there were lovely characterisations from his intended female victims: Jo Hilliard (Mina), Sara Stafford (Lucy) and Jane Hilliard (Bridget).
Shelly Seager was impressively seductive as Constance Sewer, but it was difficult to hear Albert Cook as her husband, Dr Arthur Sewer – perhaps his rather bizarre wig muffled the sound. Phil Bowditch was suitably vague as Professor Hertz Van Hyer, and there were good performances too from Rob Baker (Jonathan Farquhar) and Mark Lowes (Rennet).
However, although everyone worked hard, somehow the play’s undoubted comic potential only came across in odd snatches, with missed opportunities due, I imagine, to lack of rehearsal time or too little direction.
But it was enjoyable enough, and since I was later to become one-fifth of the winning quiz team (thanks everyone!), how could I complain?
