ONCE UPON
A MIDSUMMER KNIGHT
Shore Thing Youth Theatre
Hamworthy Social Club
Poole
September 2002

Once Upon A Midsummer Knight, Shore Thing Youth Theatre, Hamworthy Social Club IF everyone who was involved in this show is tucked up in bed as I write this, it’s no more than they deserve. They gave themselves just 24 hours to learn, rehearse and perform this show and had no more than 2 hours’ sleep in that period – yet once on stage gave every appearance of being not only wide awake, but also on top form. And if the post-show disco had even half as much energy it must have been a riot.
The story, told the story of why the prince always gets the girl and what happens to a knight once his vocation in life – the heroic rescue of a damsel in distress – has been fulfilled, and featured every fairy-tale prince and princess you can think of, plus a trio of troublesome devils, a quartet of knights (including 2CR FM’s Lloydie) and a dancing chorus.
It was quirky, fun-filled and cleverly and intelligently written by members of the company a few weeks beforehand, although the majority saw the script only the evening before the show. All credit then to the production team, led by Andy Dickinson and Lisa Maule, and their enthusiastic cast, for putting together such an enjoyable and well-organised evening.
