MURDER IN MIND
KCA Players
Pelhams
Kinson
Bournemouth
June 2003

IN an interesting case of life imitating art, the Players’ aircraft noise sound effects for this gripping thriller, set in a country house near Gatwick airport, were well and truly supplemented by the real thing.

minm1 The play’s synopsis begins when art dealer Mary returns home unexpectedly after her flight to Houston is aborted after an engine fire. minm2She finds a stranger in the house, claiming to be her husband, and soon two ‘cousins’ also arrive. Who they really are, and what they want, is cleverly concealed until the play’s closing moments, with few clues given to help any amateur sleuths in the audience.minm3

Lonnie Watson’s direction ensures that a chilling sense of menace is maintained throughout, and her entire cast capture their characters with conviction. Judy Harris gives a finely judged performance as Mary, and David Wickham, Joan Ogden and Steve Watton are superb as her supposed husband and cousins, with Mr Watton’s characterisation particularly evil.

minm4 Jeremy Smith brings sinister undertones to the role of family doctor Noel, Steve Jones is excellent as police officer Robbins and John King and Jamie Stockton make the most of their small but vital roles.
And no, I won’t tell you whodunnit, or what they did.
