LIGHTS! CAMERA! ACTION!

July 2003

I ALWAYS know the amateur theatre season is drawing to a close when I attend RMDS’ unique summer show, and it really does feel like my end of term treat.
The format never varies, so the audience, which is divided into 3 groups, sees 3 separate shows in 3 separate halls, and are met with enticing trays of nibbles as they progress from one section to the next.
It’s a light-hearted evening, but the work that goes into creating it is phenomenal, and it shows. And just where the directors – this year Poppy Garvey, David & Cindy Wischhusen and Denise Rosewell – find their highly original ideas is the stuff of miracles.
Where else would you find not only a great selection of show songs but also such unusual people as a troop of over-age boy scouts, seven highly suspect dwarves, a stilt walker, James Bond and Lara Croft? Not to mention the room entirely dedicated to the movies, complete with posters, a screen showing film clips (including a great home-made spaghetti western) and the artistes coming to life on stage before our eyes.
It’s a great evening, and one that gives all the members, whether old hands or newcomers, a chance to shine – and they certainly do.
