JACK AND THE BEANSTALK
CoMad (Colehill)
Memorial Hall
Colehill
Wimborne
December 2002

LAST night I was asked to press a button on my programme to decide whether the baddie should become a fairy or a baby, which can only mean one thing – yes, it’s that time of year again.
The “new, interactive feature” was just one of the innovative features that made this panto such fun. I also loved the family-orientated story with its nursery-rhyme theme and moralistic ending, and I’m always a sucker for a pantomime animal, particularly one so appealing as Daisy the Cow, as pretty as they come and a nifty dancer to boot.
And although the evening was just a little too long, and at times short on humour, directors and script-writers Jackie Cornish and Danny Light did a great job and were rewarded with some fine performances.
Jane Eyre brought the stage alive with her personality-filled Jack Daw, as did Louise Collins as the King’s Personal Assistant – complete with mobile and lap-top, of course. Jackie Cornish (Mary Mary) and Danny Light (Simple Simon) made a strong pairing, and there were impressive performances from the other principals, especially Allan Waters as the Duke of Malevolence, while chorus work was also notable.
Just remember – next time you sell a cow, check the proceeds!
