INTENT TO MURDER
KCA Players
Kinson Community Centre
Pelhams Park, Bournemouth
November 2002

WHEN it comes to thrillers I am hopeless at guessing the outcome, and I wouldn’t recognise a clue if it came gift-wrapped in Day-Glo paper.
Consequently this production, excellently directed and paced by Steve Watton, had me gripped from the moment the curtains parted to reveal a superb set depicting the Yorkshire home of author Janet Preston (Anne Robertson), but the denouement came as a total shock.
The story largely concerns the unexpected arrival of bank robber George (David Wickham), with an equally strong sub-plot centring around Janet’s secretary, Chris (Jan Watton), and her fiancé Larry (Jeremy Smith). It is well written and is strongly performed by the cast, with a particularly outstanding characterisation from John King as elderly vet Mr Henderson and a lovely cameo from Jean Gell as ‘daily’ Mrs Bunting, despite making her appearance only minutes before the end of the play.
Twists and turns abounded and one splendid red herring, complete with James Bond type sound effects, had the audience cheering at what they- and I of course – believed to be the demise of one particularly nasty piece of work.
Suffice to say things are seldom what they seem………
