A GILBERT & SULLIVAN GALA EVENING
Bournemouth Gilbert & Sullivan Operatic Society
Tivoli Theatre
Wimborne
and other East Dorset venues
April 2003

IF you’re a G&S fan then this concert is a treat, with semi-costumed extracts from nine of the operas and one of Gilbert’s Bab Ballads added for good measure.
And Robin Lavies’ informative yet humorous introductions are, I am sure, a great help to those audience members not too familiar with the various plots.
The company’s chorus singing is as strong as ever, heard at its best in the magnificent unaccompanied Eagle High from Utopia Limited, and there are some excellent solo numbers.
The stage itself would have benefited from a little dressing to alleviate the ‘black box’ effect, and in several other ways I found the evening a disappointment, and not up to the high standard of which the society is more than capable.
During individual scenes only some people wore costumes and/or wigs, with the others in evening dress, so the overall effect seemed a little messy. But perhaps the saddest aspect was that visually the society, however good it may be, is now past its prime, and desperately needs an injection of young blood to bring back the vitality that is lacking.
