FUN, LAUGHS, GOOD TIMES
Highcliffe Charity Players
St Marks Hall
Highcliffe
July 2003

THE days of revues such as the 1950s Kenneth Williams/Maggie Smith hit, the quirkily named Share My Lettuce, have long since passed. But thank goodness the news never filtered as far as Highcliffe - for which, after an evening that more than lived up to its title, we should all be truly grateful.
Charity Players’ regular forays into revue are legendary, but this year they have surpassed themselves. Directors Matthew Smith & Andrea Young, choreographer Jo Mansfield, musical director Ian Carter and the 14-strong cast deserve a shower of gold stars for such an innovative, slick and brilliantly performed show in which everyone was wonderfully dressed, thanks to Sue Simmerling’s Carry On Costumes. In particular, her outsize suits in the clever Shopping For Clothes sketch were just amazing.
Musical numbers from the likes of Grease, The Witches of Eastwick, Steel Pier, Aida and Smokey Joe’s Café were never less than outstanding, and as for the sketches – well, the only reason the audience didn’t fall on the floor with laughter was that there just wasn’t room. The Two Ronnies, Dick Emery and Rowan Atkinson may have performed them first but I’m pretty certain they didn’t do them any better.
No wonder these shows sell out every time.
