Poulner Players Poulner Church Hall Ringwood February 2003 This, surely, should have been realised at rehearsals, and some of the songs and the most corny dialogue imaginable could have been cut as it raised few laughs. There is an art in delivering a script like this which has to be worked on very, very hard. The scenery was attractive and well lit and I applaud the way the large cast exited with no queues, bearing in mind how tiny the back stage must be. Everybody applauded when the ship actually sailed off towards the wings, and the storm scene was realistically managed. June Buxton was more than buxom as Sarah the Cook in her outrageous costumes.Mike Freemantle as Idle Jack tried to get us to remember the most complicated rhyme to make the plant grow (I gave up),and Peter Ansell was a credible Captain Cuttle. The title role was attractively played by Harriet Carines and the young dancers added charm and movement. The tragedy of this production was that no one on stage smiled - oh no, they didn't! - well, hardy ever. In vain I looked for enjoyment on the faces of the chorus. It's difficult to smile in these circumstances, I know, but it makes the audience enjoy the show so much more. Christopher Eden Courtesy of the Bournemouth Daily Echo. |
