Theatre 2000 Regent Centre Christchurch April 2003 The story begins in a Broadway theatre where the cast is rehearsing a new show that is due to open that night. But bulldozers are pulling the building down, so everyone decamps to a warship in the harbour where the leading lady succumbs to seasickness and a newcomer from out of town steps in to save the day – and the show. Albert Brown’s production zips along beautifully, with the many comic elements highlighted to perfection, and Angie Broomfield’s choreography ensures dance routines par excellence. The six-strong cast – Cindy Wells, Louise King, Malcolm Clarke, Yvonne Loader, Mike Purnell and David Hopkins – all give star-worthy performances and a two-piece band, led by David East, accompanies them with panache. It’s not the sort of show where you leave the theatre humming the tunes, although they’re thoroughly enjoyable, but that really doesn’t matter when you can indulge yourself in such a delightful couple of hours of pure, blissful escapism.
