CINDERELLA - WHAT MIGHT HAVE HAPPENED
On-Off Pantomine Society
Kinson Community Centre
Pelhams Park
Bournemouth
January 2003

OOPS can always be relied on to come up with something different, so in this version of the story, specially written and directed by Sara Thornton, Cinders ended up with Buttons and the Uglies got the Princes Charmless (Martha Jenkins) and Gormless (Rose Lambert). And along the way there were talking trees, good and bad fairies, a court jester and enough tiny tots to ensure plenty of the ‘aah’ factor.
Dancing wasn’t always as precise as it might have been, and words sometimes failed to make it beyond the footlights – but let that pass. The costumes were lovely, the music catchy and the entire show great fun and marked by some super performances.
Cinderella (Emily Chapman) had a lovely, bubbly personality that lit up the stage, and she was well matched by Annette Mellows’ equally cheery Buttons. And Citronella (Lynne Trent) and Candarella (Karen Kennan), giving more than a nod, I think, to Ab Fab’s Patsy & Edina, were possibly the best Ugly Sisters I have seen and a tremendous double act. And how could I leave out Pauline Giles’ deliciously vile Fairy Snotrag?
At the end of the day though, this was, without doubt, a team effort - and what a team it was.
