Ranger Productions Mowlem Theatre, Swanage July 2003 It is a brilliant concept, devised and directed by the equally brilliant June Ranger and her daughter Caroline Ranger McCrory, that allows stunning tap routines as well as standard ballet and humour as well as pathos. And the outstanding costumes, sets and lighting add even more to this enchanting production, in which the 100+ performers, ranging from tinies to adult and led by Dayna Arrowsmith in the title role, are of a standard only marginally short of perfection. June’s insistence on discipline is always evident in her productions, and can never have been better illustrated than at the performance I attended, when a blown fuse mid-way through the evening caused the pre-recorded music to come to an abrupt halt. The entire cast, with no prompting, adopted a waxwork-like freeze that was maintained for the five minutes or so that it took to rectify the problem, then continued as if nothing had happened. This is theatre that really is as good as it gets. Linda Kirkman Courtesy of the Bournemouth Daily Echo. |
