BEDROOM FARCE
Victoria Players
Burgate School Drama Studio
Fordingbridge
November 2002

AFTER a worrying few months when their future existence looked decidedly bleak, the Players got off to a rousing start in their smart new home with this production, which also marked the directorial debut of chairman Barry Robbins.
Whilst it was plain that several of the cast were really not the right age for the characters they were playing, they nevertheless made the most of Alan Ayckbourn’s fine script, and the laughs came thick and fast despite an occasional lack of pace.
I was particularly impressed with Frank Allingham’s portrayal of Ernest and Sheryle Daniels’ slightly helpless Kate, but there were well thought-out performances too from Betty Price (Delia), Geoff Phillips (Nick), Anne Mitchell (Jan), Kevin Bracey-Wright (Malcolm), Tim Norton (Trevor) and Sara Carpenter (Susannah).
The set was simple but effective but, in the props department, a little more attention to detail would not have gone amiss. Ernest and Delia’s pilchards on toast were clearly just a slice of smoked salmon, newly-wed Kate’s wedding ring was nowhere to be seen, and the bedside tables and telephones were quite obviously not plugged in, despite their frequent use.
But, niggles apart, an enjoyable evening.
