New Forest Players Memorial Hall New Milton March 2003 On the surface it is simply about mother-daughter relationships, but since it also considers, among others, the work-home ethic, investment for profit and the consequences of making instant judgements, there is much for the audience to consider. Since the play is so long and wordy it needs strong direction and performances to stop it dragging, and this production has both. Ann Ramm plainly chose her cast with care, and they are virtually faultless. As Esme, an actress who feels safest in her make-believe world, Gillian Pitt catches her character to perfection, as do Sarah Haberfield as her daughter, Amy, and Matthew Ellison as Amy’s partner, Dominic. All three cope superbly with the subtle changes in their personalities necessary to convey the play’s 16 year time span. There were excellent performances too from Sonia Collyer as Esme’s mother, Evelyn, Terry Langford as her friend, Frank Oddie, and Guy Archard as actor Toby Cole. A marvellous beginning to the company’s 75th anniversary year. Linda Kirkman Courtesy of the Bournemouth Daily Echo. |
