THE action of this Michael Frayn comedy takes place in the library of a provincial newspaper office – nothing like this one, I assure you – where the new assistant librarian sets about reorganising the chaos in both the library and her colleagues’ lives.
Thanks to an absolutely marvellous set, Kate Charman’s fast –paced direction that brought out the plot’s humour and pathos in equal measures, and the cast’s accomplished performances, the scenario was 100% believable. And although there were several prompts – unsurprising in such a wordy piece - they never held up the action.
Lindsay Caplen was totally natural as disorganised librarian Lucy, and Vicky Clarke was so beautifully composed as her humourless assistant, Leslie, that the only time a flicker of a smile crossed her face was when an unintentional accident almost caused ‘feature writer’ John – a fine Tim McConnell – to fall off his chair.
Geoff Phillips gave a strong performance as messenger Geoffrey, as did Steve Russell (Arnold), Lynne Pearson (Nora) and Jeremy Houghton-Brown (Wally). And finally, a word of commiseration to whoever drew the short straw of picking up the hundreds of newspaper clippings strewn on the stage during the final scene. I hope you got your much-deserved reward.
