St Luke's Drama Group St Luke's Hall Winton Bournemouth May 2002 Part of the Norman Conquests trilogy, the play sets the characters in the dining room on the eve of Annie’s ill-fated illicit weekend with her brother-in-law, Norman (a most personable Graham Couzens). The rich humour of Alan Ayckbourn’s script was beautifully expressed, thanks to superb direction (by Peter Mimms and Lyn Greene) and the excellent timing of a first-rate cast. They were all so well suited to their roles that it was hard to believe their real-life characters might be any different. Katherine Senior was wonderfully controlled as the harassed, resigned Annie, with lovely contrasting performances from Marilyn Williams as her uptight sister-in-law, Sarah, and Penny Coulson as her vague, work-obsessed sister, Ruth. I shall treasure in particular the visual joy of Barry Baynton’s hen-pecked Reg kissing, after some thought, a china cat in preference to his wife, and also Bob Hucklesby’s endearingly hapless Tom, peering in total bewilderment from his tiny chair over the top of a dining table he could barely reach. It all added up to a well-conceived and hugely enjoyable evening. Linda Kirkman Courtesy of the Bournemouth Daily Echo
