QUEEN OF THE NILE
Zenith Theatre Company
St Aldhelm's Hall
Branksome, Poole
June 2002

I WONDER if Zenith knew that my previous cat was called Cleopatra and the present one is Octavia? Perhaps that was what gave them the idea for this totally original ‘magnificent musical extravaganza’, which gave its audience a fascinating insight into the history of Egypt’s last Pharaoh and a highly entertaining evening into the bargain.
There seems to be no expense spared when it comes to this company’s shows, and even if you ignored the outstanding set and opulent costumes – not that you’d want to – the auditorium was filled with eye-catching artefacts. In fact, the only thing missing was a camel or two.
The story - which incorporated some fine dance routines and an eclectic mix of songs ranging from Reviewing the Situation to Let Me Entertain You - followed the life of Cleopatra (an excellent, sultry Carla Stewart) and her relationships with Julius Caesar (Len Murray) and Mark Anthony (Ian Roth). It also gave a prominent role to her pet snake, Rasp the Asp (a delightfully camp Andy Scrivens).
Perhaps there were a few too many musical numbers, and one or two characters might have been a little more sure of their lines, but let that pass. Oh, and can I have my Royalties please?
