THE MATING GAME
Kinson (KCA) Players
Kinson Cummunity Centre
Pelhams
Bournemouth
November 2001

I CAN’T remember the last time I sat through a production where the audience laughed out loud throughout the performance, but neither can I remember ever seeing anything as consistently funny as this glorious comedy.
The plot, about the complications that ensue as a well-known TV personality tries to justify his reputation as a serial Lothario, is well constructed, and Lonnie Watson’s excellent direction keeps the pace of this near-farce fast and frantic.
Many of the laughs come from the wonderful mechanics of the set. I would defy anyone to keep a straight face as a double bed, which rises into a wall cavity at the touch of a button, does so complete with occupant – or disappears just as someone attempts to throw himself onto it. Others find themselves revolving into a cupboard together with a desk and chair, or attacked by a sliding filing cabinet…..
And the cast is first-class, especially Steve Watton as TV star Draycott Harris and David Wickham as his brother, James. Their brilliant timing and superbly controlled performances, especially when they descend into schnapps-induced drunkenness, are a joy. There are lovely performances too from Jan Watton as PR girl Honey Tooks, Anne Robertson as Draycott’s lovelorn secretary and Joan Ogden as Mrs Finney, the lady who ‘does’ for him.
A blissful evening.
