CRAZY FOR YOU
The Wand'ring Minstrels
Layard Theatre
Canford School
Poole
August 2002

DIRECTOR Penny Gerken chose to move this Gershwin musical back a decade from its usual 1930s setting, and to place the emphasis rather more on the dialogue than the spectacular dance routines that were the highlight of the recent London production.
Certainly the 1920s costumes looked good, and an exceptionally strong principal line-up, led by Dale Waterworth (Bobby Child), Liz Ferrie (Polly Baker) and Andrew Keates (Bela Zangler), did the production proud and made the show well worth seeing.
There were plenty of humorous touches too, although one or two backfired – in particular a Marx Brothers audition sequence that completely drowned out the principal dialogue going on at the same time.
Choreographer Claire Hutchins did wonders with a young and mostly inexperienced “Follies” chorus, and although a few more smiles would not have gone amiss, the sparkle of lead “Follies” Tess (Katie Mee) and Patsy (Marie Blake) more than made up for any lacking elsewhere.
The men’s chorus, although strong vocally, seemed to have problems with the more difficult harmonies – but they were not helped by the orchestra’s brass section, who apparently shared the problem.
And finally – could someone please use one of those fake guns to shoot the scene changers? At times the noise was unbelievable.
