Theatre 2000 Pavilion Bournemouth July 2002 They say that showbiz is all about illusion, and the stunning feathers, sequins, sparkle and magnificent head-dresses are all guaranteed to make you overlook the fact that the show’s plot is pitifully weak and the songs mostly unmemorable. But please don’t miss it, because the company, as always, puts in 150% effort – and it shows in Angie Broomfield’s finely directed show. Cracking dance routines, the brilliant Ron Armstrong Orchestra – nice touch to raise the pit a couple of times so that they could be seen – and a strong principal line-up make for a production that’s as good as it gets. I’m sure that by the time you read this, the technical glitches – out of the company’s control - that caused a few first-night problems will be long forgotten. Frank Beakhouse and Rebecca Weeks, excellent performers both, are a perfect match as Tony and Lola, and there’s lovely pairing too in Andrea Young’s quirky Gladys and Richard Bennett’s hang-dog Sam Silver, and Julian Smith’s sleazy gangster Rico and Cindy Wells’ smouldering Conchita. Music and passion are always the fashion at the Copa. Go. Enjoy. Linda Kirkman Courtesy of the Bournemouth Daily Echo |
