BLITZ TO BROADWAY
Ranger Productions
Mowlem Theatre
Swanage
July 2002

THIS celebration of 50 years of musical theatre, which moved from wartime London to the Broadway of today, was quite simply one of the most enjoyable evenings I have ever spent at the theatre. The entire show was devised, directed and choreographed by Caroline Ranger McCrory and the emotion, energy, talent and precision of her cast left me reeling and totally overwhelmed at the sheer quality of it all. And an incredibly versatile scaffolding set, outstanding lighting effects and a myriad of colourful costumes added even more.
Blitz told the story of a few individuals searching for a glimpse of joy amid the pain and anguish of war, and provided pathos and the kind of frenzied enjoyment of those living as if each day might be their last, illustrated through brilliant and original dance numbers.
The second part of the evening focused on shows ranging from Cabaret, Forever Tango, Guys & Dolls and Les Miserables to Jekyll and Hyde, West Side Story, Sweet Charity, Evita and Swing Kids. Once again the company’s precision was faultless, whether in acted scenes, song or dance, and I was particularly impressed with the seamless transitions from one show to the next.
No wonder the audience didn’t want to leave.
