SIX OF THE BEST
Poole & Parkstone's Choir
Barrington Theatre
Ferndown
July 2002

COMPOSERS ranging from Porter, Mozart and Loewe to Mercer, Bernstein and Ellington provided a well-balanced programme at this concert, which was performed to The Choir’s usual impeccable standard with superb accompaniment on piano, drums and strings.
Among the selections were medleys from Kiss Me Kate and Camelot and songs such as Begin the Beguine, Laudate Dominum, Blues in the Night, It Don’t Mean a Thing and Life is Happiness Indeed (Candide). The excellent vocal arrangements showed the company’s versatility and were sung with clarity, precision and obvious enjoyment, thanks to the high demands of “The Boss”, musical director Jean Chambers.
Excellent matching outfits added even more class to the evening, with the ladies in black trousers and tops with sheer lilac floor-length jackets and men in black trousers and lilac shirts with black sparkly waistcoats, ringing the changes in the second half with coloured scarves and waistcoats.
Unfortunately though, the visual impact was lessened by the musical director’s presence on the stage itself, rather than on the floor of the auditorium, unintentionally obscuring sections of the choir - and the lack of enough raised platforms meant that the middle row of singers was also difficult to see. And when they’re as good as these, that’s a pity.
