OUTSIDE EDGE THE CAST ARE A MATCH FOR THE QUALITY SCRIPT A review of the Angel Players production by Linda Kirkman, courtesy of the Daily Echo |

It is difficult to fail with such a high-calibre comedy as this one by Richard Harris, and his beautifully drawn characters and sparkling script were plainly enjoyed by a capacity audience. But with a cast of nine and a smallish company from which to choose them, it was perhaps inevitable that certain characters would make rather less impact than others, and there were several missed opportunities as the story's fraught cricket match progressed. Two of the strongest performances came from ladies, with Jenny Davidson, a delightfully put-upon Miriam, exasperated at the single-mindedness of her team captain husband, Roger (Ron Kite), and Lesley Gannon was a splendidly larger-than-life Maggie, the bricklaying wife of wimpish Kevin (David Money). There were good characterisations from David Hooker as Dennis and Richard Harries Jones as the insufferable Alex. While Diana Chrisman was a sweetly gauche Sharon, Janet Richie's Ginnie, although effectively portrayed, had a strange habit of closing her eyes whenever she spoke, and Steve Pringle (Bob) needed to inject a lot more "oomph" into his character. But I think, overall, the team won its match. LINDA KIRKMAN |
